Eating at St Luke’s Diner - Mother's Day Special: Theotokos

Key passages are Luke 1:16-55, Luke 2:15-20, and Luke 2:36-40.

Sermon Discussion Questions

  1. What feeling does Mother’s Day bring for you? Share celebrations and hardships together as community and pray for and encourage one another.
  2. Food is a picture of Jesus. In Jesus death, we find life. Anything we eat has to die in order to give us life. Why do you think God gives us this gospel parallel?
  3. “Theology’s vocation is alimentation.” If the job of theology is to nourish us, then why is a right theology important? (consider this especially in relation to difficult times)
  4. Consider that Mary discipled Jesus. How can all of us learn from Mary’s example and lead like she did?
  5. Who was Mary before she was chosen to bear our Savior? What does that tell us about God?

Quote from Critique of Apollinarius and Apollinarianism by St.Gregory of Nazianzus, "What has not been assumed has not been healed.”

Apollinarianism is the heresy that Jesus had a normal human body but a divine mind instead of a regular human soul.

Nestorius was Archbishop of Constantinople from 10 April 428 to August 431, and he proposed Mary be called Christokos instead of Theotokos. He didn't find any support.
